The origin of the kilt is not Scottish as is widely believed.  Kilts were worn long before there were Celts.  The ancient Egyptians wore kilts, to indicate age and social rank.  In the late 1500's, the Hebrides and Highlands of Scotland brought the kilt into their fashion scene.  Known as the 'great kilt, it was a full length garment, whose upper half could be worn as a cloak draped over the shoulder.  The small kilt or walking kilt (similar to the 'modern' kilt) did not develop until the late 17th or early 18th century, and is essentially the bottom half of the great kilt.'
